Choosing an EV charger for your home

Charging at home is the cheapest and easiest way to run an electric car. Plug in when you get home, wake up to a full battery. Every Ocular home charger here does that. The differences come down to your power supply, whether you have solar, and who else uses the charger.

Why install a home EV charging station

The charger that came with your car plugs into a normal power point and adds roughly 10 to 15 km of range an hour. A wall-mounted home EV charging station runs at 7kW or 22kW, so a typical EV goes from low to full overnight instead of over two days. It also charges safely, with built-in RCD protection and a proper circuit from your switchboard, and the smart models let you schedule charging for off-peak rates or your solar.

Which electric car charger for home suits you

Three questions get you there.

Single phase or three phase power

Most Australian homes have single phase power, which means a 7kW EV charger. If your switchboard has three phase power, a 22kW EV charger will use it. Not sure? A main switch made of three switches linked together usually means three phase. Your electrician can confirm it in a minute.

Solar or no solar

Got panels on the roof, or planning to? The IQ Home Solar comes with CT clamps that watch your household supply, so the charger soaks up excess solar instead of exporting it for cents. No solar? The LTE Plus is the simple pick, and the IQ Mini and IQ Wallbox are the smart picks for shared driveways and apartments.

Cable or socket

Tethered models have the Type 2 cable permanently attached: park, plug in, done. Socket models have no fixed cable, so you bring your own Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Sockets suit a tidy garage, a shared carpark, or anyone who wants to choose their own cable length.

Wall mounted EV chargers, or on a stand

Every charger here mounts to a wall. If there's no wall near the parking bay, the IQ range (Home Solar, Mini and Wallbox) also fits the Ocular IQ charger stand, a powder coated steel pedestal that bolts to the ground.

Ocular EV chargers, built for Australian conditions

Ocular is an Australian EV charger company with local stock and local support. Every model in this range is rated for indoor and outdoor use (IP55), handles -30°C to +50°C, and carries RCM certification for the Australian market. Warranties run two to three years depending on the model, with extended cover available.

Installation and what you'll need

Every home EV charger must be installed by a licensed electrician. Each model needs its own circuit with a 40A Type A RCBO. Most installs take a few hours. If you're not sure your switchboard has room, get your sparky to check before you order.
