How a IQ solar EV charger works

Your solar makes more power than the house uses in the middle of the day. Normally the surplus goes back to the grid for a small feed-in credit. The IQ Home Solar measures that surplus through the CT clamp on your incoming supply and matches the charging rate to it. More sun, faster charging. Cloud comes over, it slows down. The app offers charging modes to suit how much solar you make, from solar-only through to full speed off the grid when you're in a hurry.

EV charger with a CT clamp: what's included

One current transformer clips around the active conductor at your meter, no wiring to cut. It comes with a 20m signal lead, extendable to 100m with insulated twisted pair, rated to 100A with a 16mm internal diameter (fits up to 50mm² XLPE). That covers the vast majority of home switchboards.

EV charger with load balancing: protecting your switchboard

The same CT clamp tells the charger what the whole house is drawing. If you're close to your main breaker's limit, the charger drops its current until the load eases, then ramps back up. It means you can run a 32A charger on a home that couldn't otherwise spare it, without an upgrade at the pole.

Cable or socket: which variant

5m Type 2 cable

Permanently attached. Park, plug in, walk away. Best for a dedicated garage bay.

Type 2 socket

No fixed cable. You supply a Type 2 to Type 2 lead in whatever length suits. Tidier on the wall, and the pick for a shared driveway or if you'd rather not have 5m of cable hanging up.

Installation

Licensed electrician only. Dedicated circuit with a 40A Type A RCBO. The CT clamp goes on the main incoming active at the switchboard and the signal lead runs back to the charger, so mention the distance when you book the sparky.
