Drying your car without touching the paint
Most of the swirl marks in a dark bonnet did not come from washing. They came from drying. Every pass with a towel drags whatever the rinse missed across the clear coat, and on a black or dark blue car you can watch it happen in the sun.
A car air dryer removes that step. Filtered air at volume lifts the water off the panel and out of the places a towel was never going to reach anyway: mirror housings, badge edges, grille slats, wheel nuts, panel gaps, the roof rails. Nothing touches the paint.
Who actually needs one
Dark paint
If your car is black, dark grey, dark blue or red, this is the single biggest upgrade you can make to how it looks after a wash. Light coloured cars hide towel marks. Dark ones broadcast them.
Anyone chasing drips
You know the ones. You finish the car, step back, and thirty seconds later water runs out of a mirror and down the door. A dryer clears those cavities properly the first time.
Ceramic coated and PPF cars
If you have paid for a coating or paint protection film, dragging a towel over it every wash is working against the money you spent.
How to choose a car air dryer
Corded or cordless
Corded units give you unlimited run time, which matters if you are drying more than one vehicle or working slowly. Cordless removes the lead entirely, which matters if you wash on the driveway, at a friend's place, or anywhere the nearest power point is a long way off. See the cordless car dryers.
Air volume, not just noise
A dryer that sounds aggressive is not necessarily moving much air. Volume of airflow is what shifts water off a panel quickly. Check the figures on the individual product page rather than judging by how loud the demo video is.
Filtration
The whole point of a dryer is that nothing abrasive touches the paint. That falls apart if the machine is picking up grit off the garage floor and firing it at the car. A proper intake filter is not optional on a tool like this.
Warm air
Some dryers warm the air slightly, which speeds up evaporation and is genuinely pleasant to use in a Melbourne winter. Check the specification on the model you are looking at.
Where it will live
A dryer that gets stored in a cupboard behind the paint tins is a dryer that stops getting used. Think about mounting or hanging it near where you wash, on the same wall as the rest of your gear.
Where a dryer fits in the wash
The order
Rinse, wash, rinse, then dry. Use the dryer while the car is still wet rather than after the water has half evaporated and left deposits behind.
Work top down
Roof, glass, bonnet and boot, then the sides, then the lower panels and wheels last. Water runs downhill, so drying the sills first just means doing them twice.
Blow out the cavities
Mirrors, badges, grilles, door handles, fuel flap, wheel nuts and panel gaps. This is where a dryer earns its money, and it is the part a towel physically cannot do.
Building the rest of the wash setup
A dryer is one third of a proper garage wash bay. The other two are a wall mounted pressure washer and a wall mounted vacuum for the interior. Our detailing chemicals cover the consumables.
If you are setting up from scratch, the Bigboi Ultimate Garage packages and the Blahst Ultimate Garage Fit-out Bundle put washer, vacuum and dryer together for less than buying the three separately.
Common questions
Can I just use a leaf blower?
People do, and it is better than nothing, but a leaf blower has no filtration on the intake. It will happily pick up dust and grit and blast it at your paint. It also puts out unfiltered air that has been through a motor housing full of debris. A purpose built car dryer filters the air before it reaches the vehicle.
Will it dry the car completely?
On most panels, yes. Some people still finish with a quick pass of a drying towel on flat horizontal surfaces. The value of the dryer is that it does the ninety percent no towel can reach, and it means the towel work you do do is on an almost dry car rather than a soaking one.
Is it safe on paint protection film and ceramic coatings?
Yes, and it is the preferred method. No contact means no marring.
Do you ship Australia wide?
Yes, free shipping Australia wide, with a price match guarantee. Call 1300 405 581 if you want a hand choosing.
